My friend, Missy in Portland Oregon, sent me these pictures earlier this evening. They show Mount St Helens from her office window this afternoon as the sleeping volcano stirs and sends hot ash some 20,000 feet into the air.
Scientists are warning that the Washington landmark could spectacularly erupt again at anytime with the same kind of force as it did some 25 years ago when.
Missy sent me these pictures partly because we were both at Mount St Helens in the new year just before I flew back home to the UK. Even then the sleeping giant was gently sending smoke and steam into the air.

Every time I’m in class all day long, something like this happens. I went up in Oct. when it was smoking a lot, but the roads were closed down for a 30-mile radius or something, and the air being so hazy…you couldn’t even tell anything was happening save for the crowds of people. I sat and drank most of the afternoon, hoping it’d blow. Yeah. No such luck.

Well thank you Nenaluli, though I must give credit to Missy for the top two pictures in this post as she took them from her office in portland. But hey, I shall take a compliment when i can get one ;-)

Well thank you for the compliments folks. Lets hope when she blows it won’t result in any catastrophies.

Your pictures were the first thing that attracted me to your site, and I still wonder at the magnificence of them. You truly are a wonderful photographer Simon :-)
On a completely different subject, I always love the fact that you post so often. So many people never update their xangas and it drives me bonkers with nothing fun to read. So thanks for the entertaining posts!

Those are nice pictures, but the thought of Mt. St. Helens erupting again and the effect that could have on people’s lives there is somewhat frightening.
