Donnie Davies from Baytown, Houston, is a Christian musician and a “reformed homosexual” doing what he says is the Lords work by “letting people know that God hates a Fag.” His recent song performed with a band by the name of ‘Evening Service’ is called ‘The Bible Says’ and in an upbeat chirpy fashion not unlike a lot of Christian music you’ve heard, Donnie sings that “God hates a fag, and if you’re a fag he hates you too.”
“Being from south Houston has been as much of a factor in the tone of the music as being Christian.” Says Donnie who runs a Christian program called C.H.O.P.S. (Changing Homosexuals Into Ordinary People) “Houston is a strange place and we feel like it is reflected in our music. We live not too far from the chemical plants in Baytown and sometimes being so close to that kind of industry creates intense self-reflection, which is what we are all about.”
The video to ‘The Bible Says’ (above) shows Donnie emerging from a bright white light in a pink shirt with a guitar in hand. That’s followed by scenes of Donnie praying, singing and looking contemplative as the he sings lines like “The Bible says, plain as day, with a man, you shall not lay.”
But look a little closer at Donnie’s guitar playing in the video and you begin to get the sense of something not being on the level. He’s not playing the instrument at all, in fact he’s not even faking it well either, and in the background the guy playing the piano is also doing a terrible job. Then he launches into the chorus with “Lord help them hear me, and make clear my voice, because being gay, is nothing but a choice.”
Yes, it’s a joke. Donnie Davis is not real and neither is his band, C.H.O.P.S., Love God’s Way ministries, or any of the other elaborate internet props that have been created to pull off this audacious and fantasticaly offensive gag.
REMOVED BY YOUTUBE
The video was on YouTube, but after only a few days it was removed. It’s still available on myspace for the time being, but presumably because of the strain on ‘Donnie’s’ on website, the video is no longer available there either. In fact as fast as it appeared it seems to have dissapeared.
When I saw the video I was nearly crying with laughter, it seemed so very obviously a joke to me. The moustache, the cheesy video, the gratuitous praying, there was no way this was the real deal. But as I followed links to the ‘Love God’s Way Ministries‘ website, Donnie’s bands website ‘Evening Service‘, and even his own website, I began to question my first assumption. The language and graphics seemed genuine enough. “Christian Rock doesn’t have to be about boundries, it primarily needs to be about faith.” So says eveningservice.com. The Love Gods Way Ministries website claims to specialize in “Christian topics other Ministries do not want to talk about.”
But there are some giveaway signs of humor. At the Love Gods Way Ministries website there is a “valuable resource’ for Christian parents in the form of a list of “gay bands to watch out for.” These include Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainwright, Wilco, The Doors, Sufjan Stevens, Metallica, The Rolling Stones, John Mayer, Eminmen, The Killers, Frank Sinatra, and many others. A similar list of “safe bands” is desperately short.
There is also another video featuring Donnie sounding suspiciously similar to prosperity preacher Joel Osteen who runs the Lakewood church, one of the largest so called mega churches in the United States, also based in Houston.
Another telling sign that this is indeed an elaborate gag is the fact that despite claims that Davies has been singing Christian music for years, a quick search on Google (performed on Jan 24th, 07) only finds two significant mentions of the a Donnie Davies in Christian music. Both of those are at websites that ‘Donnie’ is cleary associated with, and suspiciously both domain names eveningservice.com and lovegodsway.org were purchased at roughly the same time as donniedavies.com, toward the end of 2006.
UNFORTUNATELY BELIEVABLE
Despite the evidence, the gag has already been very effective at making some believe that it is indeed a genuine Christian music video. The YouTube appearance provoked some heated knee jerk reactions before it was deleted.
“This is not in the least bit funny, whether it’s meant as a joke (I doubt it) or not. Having a ‘Christian’ preaching hate toward anyone is repulsive.” Read one comment. Another response attacked the video. “You are a sick person and I hope whatever children u might have all turn out gay!” Though my favorite comment read. “$50 says this guy wears Care Bears pajamas and lives on his mom’s sofa.”
No doubt YouTube were inundated with complaints about the video and that is why they chose to remove it so swiftly. Ironic then that the video sharing site have never felt the same sense of urgency to remove any of the actual God Hates Fags spew that comes from the Westboro Baptist Church and the Reverend Fred Phelps.
As funny as this might be, it should serve as cause for alarm to Christians that so many people find it entirely believable that this could indeed a real Christian video. That fact that it doesn’t immediately scream fake perhaps tell us more about the state of our churches than Christians might otherwise be comfortable admitting.

goes to show you “Crazy” comes in all walks of life. Not all Christians beleive the homosexual community is going to Hell.

Even though this is supposed to be a joke, this song pisses me off. Why? Because I know way too many people with this mindset. I feel the need to set the record straight.
For the record, God loves PEOPLE and God hates SIN. BEING gay is not a sin. The ACT of homosexuality is the sin, and even then, God doesn’t hate the people.
If “God hates fags,†then God hates all sinners, because no sin can be “big†to God. Liars, adulterers, even people who *gasp* break the speed limit! Oh no! We’re all hated by God!!
No, wait . . . Jesus died on the cross for ALL sinners. When we accept Him and His love, we ALL are made clean.
Even though this guy has written (and is apparently proud of) this song, I still love him. I hate what he’s written and the fact that he’s so hypocritically judging others, but I love HIM. Why? Because, if you read the Bible, Jesus clearly commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Maybe put THAT in a song there, Don.

I have to say…if this guy DOES live in Baytown, I have to meet him. I mean, I had no idea someone with such a great sense of sarcasm lives in this place.
We should have a few beers together.
And I think he might enjoy joining my kids to watch The Wiggles as well.

hmmmm… you know I went to his website and there’s a dead give away in his quote… I read it and underneathe its signed ‘Oscar Wilde (reformed homosexual)’. I took a double take, wait… and then I joke. Unless my english literature history serves me wrong.. he wasnt reformed…
Shae, I expected you to say something like that.. lol. I’m sure he’d enjoy the wiggles..
I also went to the fred phelps youtube link…briefly. that’s all that was needed. You know, i really hate that we discriminate against sins. Homosexuality is right there in the list of adultery, and drunkards, and that sort of thing.. and you dont hear this kind of junk coming out about those cheating on their wives. I dont understand it. i actually just posted a story on my site about a man saying God hated the women in an abortion clinic…i dont understand it and its embarassing… i really wish we’d stop with the God hating.

As Andrew Sullivan from TIME magazine says. “It illuminates what it satirizes more deeply than any argument could.” And that, clearly is the point. The video and subsiquent videos are meant to whip everyone up in the same way Borat did until we got the joke.
I spoke briefly (via IM) with ‘Pastor Davies’ tonight. I asked him a couple of questions and it became clear that he, like Borat, will only conduct conversations on the subject in character.
Hopefully Christians will be able to laugh this off, and maybe make the points Rachel did above. All too often Christians talk about who is unworthy, who is wrong, who is going to hell. It’s ugly rhetoric that repells more than it attracts.
In reality, what I think you’ll see is people simply reacting and many times in regretable ways in the same way they did when Borat got a bunch of Cowboys in Arizona to sing “Throw the jew down the well.” Sacha Baron Cohen the man who plays Borat comes from a Orthodox Jewish background.

Man, I wish I had a video capture feature. I’d love to host this song, but I can’t seem to grab the file.
He’s got a video response to the controversy up now, and it’s hilarious as well. Did you notice the Melissa Etheridge-like staging in the original? Very nicely done.

I don’t even know how to start this, it’s so heavy the frustration I feel when someone gets in that judge stance and begins to proclaim what is right and what is wrong. If anyone ever believed in God, they wouldn’t dare judge another human being. I cannot stress this enough. I guess I should be defending what I believe in but I know now that’s not even necessary, it is a lone path for each of us and no one can tell you where you stand in this world…

I just watched the video after reading about it on andrew sullivan’s site…..its a complete pi**take alright but what is not at all funny is that some morons will think its serious and it only takes one clown singing this chorus while beating up some 12 year old kid to expose the video for what it actually is in my opinion, a cynical attention-seeking ploy using gay prejudice as bait to hype some crappy song.
Not everyone will “GET” it..and the worst types of all will use it to reinforce the whole anti gay garbage.Words are far too powerful to trivialise and use like this, whether its intended or not. People have should be fully aware of the consequences of using stuff like this or promoting it in any way. People are seriously distressed when theyre made to feel “different”or unloved. The latest figures on bullying speak for themselves. Its a shitty joke. And a poorly thought out idea. Thats how I see it. Ss for being told to lighten up tell that to the kid who doesnt understand this is a joke.

I didn’t find this funny or offencive as much as sad. Being a christain and having gone to many different churches I’ve never before encountered a person that believes that God hates homosexuals though ure there are some out there. It is no where to be found in the Bible. The thing that does bother me is that the media often latches on to the few and rare instead of real Christians who belive that homosexuality is sin but that God loves sinners (including myself) and died on the cross for them. This is the message that is preached in 95% of the Churches across america but you never see that message on ABC news.

The band Bobby Conn and The Glass Gypsies are behind the thing.
Just look at the second guy from the left. He looks strikingly similar to our friend Donnie Davies. I’m not making any claims… just pointing out an interesting similarity.

I…just dont know what to say. I did agree with Bob however–if that is his real name. I was wondering though, did people think it was funny because it mocked fundies or because the guy kept saying “god hates a fag.” And just what “god” are we talking about anyway?

To be fair Bob (and Josh) the reason why you don’t see nice mild mannered Christian folk on ABC is because they are as boring as a wet weekend. I don’t mean that in a nasty way you understand, heck I am as boring as a wet weekend too!
What I mean is that TV stations want high viewing figures so they can grab more advertising and make more money. So while the both of you are Christians whom I have a great deal of time as respect for not only as friends but also as Christians, you’re not nearly as much of a spectacle as Pat Robinson, Jerry Falwell or Ann Coulter!
In fairness characters like those I just mentioned also make a serious effort to go on TV. They say controversial things and do there best to keep themselves in the limelight. Ann Coulter sells books precisely because she is a bitch, plain and simple.
It’s the same reason why you’ll rarely see a nice all American mild mannered Muslim on ABC or Fox. There is no profit in putting such a person on TV if the other station are going to sell more Toyota Camrey’s by sticking Ann Coulter on the air to spout some venomous spew that will be all over YouTube by lunchtime the next day!

Lendo, I’m not sure this con has anything to do with that conn. For a start the guys in the ‘Bible Says’ video can’t play their instruments. It might be, but then surely there are a whole load of slightly chubby guys it could be? We’ll see I guess. If nothing else Bobby Conn should be making hey while there is a moment of interest in them.
If it is Colby Starck from ‘Bobby Conn and the glass gypsies’ then I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Shame though, I Kind of didn’t want to find out. I found an image on connfest.bobbyconn.co.uk which I think might be Colby taken in 2003. If so, what do you think?
You be the judge: Is this the same man? Also see this one.

I know, it’s completely hilarious! You should go read the sites he links to. The more interesting aspect of this at the moment is how the video keeps getting removed from places like YouTube and Google Video. Interesting given Google claims about being relatively free of censorship.
The video has not been down at all on this site, and should that provider decide to remove it I have it waiting in the wings on my own server. I was just reluctant to host it given that for a few days at least it will get hammered if I am the only damn person in the world with the balls to put it on the internet!

First of all – Simon, I enjoyed your blog on this.
No, people. Davies is not Colby Starck of Bobby Conn. Nor is he Todd Quillen. And most of you amateur armchair detectives are asking the wrong questions as you attempt to make sense of this mess. The big wrong question: it is brilliant performance art, or is Donnie for real? The fault lies in the second half of the question. No – “Donnie” is not for real, but that does not prove that he is lampooning fundamentalism’s take on homosexuality. My theory: the man who calls himself Donnie Davies is in fact a real Christian – not the garden variety fundamentalist type that we can easily get a handle on, but the renegade, dangerous, irrational type – the kind that could, let’s say, find the Bible verse to justify bombing an abortion clinic. His message is VERY sincere – God hates homosexuality. And if that statement isn’t enough shock and awe for you, he quickly follows it up with this knife-twist: if you are one of them, God hates you personally [in the video he delivers this line with a particularly insidious and evil smile]. The name of the song is “The Bible Says,” which speaks strongly to his bottom-line message: The Bible definitively condemns homosexuality. The Bible says it and that validates it – that’s what Donnie really wants you to know.
The whole thing is clever only in the sense that Davies realized that he could speak his mind in song and get away with it if he put it up on the Web in some sort of Christian ministry package — and that posing as a reformed homosexual might bring some credibility to the whole ruse. We find it hard to believe there are such losers in this world; we don’t want to believe they are out there. But listen to this man: God hates fags. Whoever Donnie is, he really does mean it, and he must be happy that he’s getting away with saying it right now.
To those who say it’s parody because there are “humorous” double entendres in the lyrics, lines like “there is no backdoor to heaven” actually support my argument. Who says that bigots can’t bust a double entendre every once in awhile? As for his “gay music” and “safe music” lists, I don’t find them humorous enough to be satirical — in fact, they just sort of have the ring of a homophobic hate list he’s been compiling for years. “But why is Cyndi Lauper on the safe list?,” you irony theorists ask. Well, for starters, she is a born-again Christian. Comments like “really gay” next to Elton John’s name read to me like “I REALLY hate THAT fag.” Think about it: there’s not much actual humor to be found here.
To paraphrase Forrest Gump, hate is as hate does. All you intellectual snobs who pity the humorless irony-challenged folks like me who “just don’t get it” need to wake up and smell the vitriol.

I watched all of the videos that you posted, and honestly the whole thing tied my stomache in knots. I get the humor of the Donnie Davies thing, but it is hard to hear even knowing that it is satire. And then there’s Fred Phelps. I find it scary that a person can become so locked up in darkness, and be so smug about it. It gives me reason to pause. Being a religious person myself, I wonder if a person like him was ever like me, and slowly over time, through minute little increments moved toward the person he is today. I don’t think that religion innately leads to bigotry, prejudice and hate. Rather, I think such things are innate to the human condition and express themselves in a variety of ways: religious, political, ethnic, ideological, etc. But still, I am reminded of C.S. Lewis’ words “of all the badmen in the world, none are worse than religious badmen”. Lewis grounded this statement in his conviction that the supernatural has a way of augmenting the natural, both for good and for bad. I personally have found that Christianity has given me reason to put a check on myself, to acknowledge my limitations, and shortcoming, and in short to keep me from being smug (even as proud as I am). And yet, I look at Phelps and I think, “surely he was not always that way.” So, what accounts for how a person becomes like that?

I’m a christian, and i can’t take it when people impersonate us.. the true message of christianity is not hate, but unfortunately a lot of people will take this guy seriously, and think that all christians are like that.
I get called a gay hater almost every time someone finds out i’m a christian.
so thanks a lot Phelps and Davies for lowering everyones perception of me.

Chad, that’s an interesting theory… and is really sad if its true… BUT I dont think so. IF you watch the video of him on his site, under the ‘watch’ link… he says some ridiculously got to be sarcastic/fake things. Like that he’s tired of all the fat comments, he’s lost 120 pounds and can dunk a basketball. Also in that segment he says, “Jesus loves you but God hates you , and that’s just the bottom…” BUT then if you go to his youth site, he says, “God loves you even if he hates your homosexuality.” Clearly, the man doesnt have his own story straight, and i’d say that’s probably because its not really his belief. SO that’s my theory…
I will say I am a little concerned about all the response he’s getting. I know a lot of kids out there really struggling with this kind of issue, and I just know they’re emailing him. I am concerned about the kinds of responses he’s giving them- whether he’s a religious madman or just a prankster. Either way, it would seem he’s bitter about something, and that’s not good for youth. hopefully he’s not giving them any responses… but he has a youth ministry link (CHOPS).. and that just bothers me a lot.

There’s another very tempting theory out there. That the music video is an excerpt from an upcoming satirical movie lampooning fundamentalism, featuring the Donnie Davies character. This post from someone called Callie on http://www.thestranger.com sums it up:
Viral Marketing. I have been following this entire ordeal since the beginning on SLOG, and have watched all of the videos. In light of C.H.O.P.S. and Donnie’s “all will be revealed” comment, this is CLEARLY viral marketing. Probably for a movie. A comedy called C.H.O.P.S., a la “But I’m a Cheerleader?” Maybe. This is…obviously some sort of viral market stunt for a movie starring Donnie Davies (the character). I guess only time will tell.

Thanks Lendo for tirelessly looking into this and showing us all the real guy this time. I thought your first guy was a bum steer, but you nearly got me with that one! :-)
I hope Joel gives an interview somewhere soon. I’d be real intrested in knowing a little more about his inspiration and possible motives for the gag. Either way it was damn funny and I still laugh watching it. “Righteous man, get on your knees, there lies no virtue, in sodemy.” LOL!!

Nice discussion here. It’s odd that on Joe.My.God there’s also a persistent belief in Davies being real and NOT joel oglesby. Having seen the “dating” YouTube video, I’m convinced. And I suspect the entire thing is, as Joe suggests, promotion for a movie to come.
