This is one of the few unpublished photographs from 366 pictures that I think is better than the one that was actually published. Read on to find out why.

Thai cop directing traffic and singing

It was a typically warm May night in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I’d been wandering around one of the local night markets when I came upon this police officer who was directing traffic while busking! At first I thought he was a busker dressed as a police officer, but no, he really was a genuine policeman and was very much on duty, stopping at various points to talk to motorists.

A nearby stall-holder struck up a conversation with me and explained that the policeman was a regular at the market. He told me the popular policeman collected money for a local charity and that he could be found at other times in various locations around the city.

I love the shot just because it’s a singing policeman, but the two girls in the background, who were taking a picture of him, add to the picture too. In the end I didn’t use the shot because I felt sure I would find him again and I liked the shot I had taken just a few minutes earlier. That shot was an amusing photograph of three ladyboys, one of whom is quite large! The picture just made me laugh as did my entire interaction with the three of them. Sadly though I never saw the singing policeman again, and had I known that I wouldn’t see him again I would have chosen this shot instead.
