I almost don’t want to post this after the debacle in the comments on the last cartoon I posted, but I’m looking at this thinking to myself that this cartoon cannot possibly provoke any over-analyzing, surely? However, if you find this offensive then may I suggest that you book a vacation, somewhere warm and relaxing, a place where you can spend a little ‘you time‘ to chill the f**k out!

Alex Chadwick is sitting in Union Station in Washington looking for someone to share their story with him, it doesn’t take long before a man sits across the table from him and talks about how he went from being a homeless “bum” to a well dressed man.

“Don’t talk to strangers.” That’s what your mother probably always used to tell you, it was good advice in most cases, though we’ve become virtual hermits living lives that aren’t ordinarily open to new connections with people we don’t know. It’s the modern default to keep ones self to themselves and not to talk to strangers, and I happen to think that’s somewhat of a sad situation to be in.

Alex Chadwick has travelled across America in search of random connections, finding people who are willing to talk to a stranger. In his distinctive hat and sat behind a small table with a hand written sign that reads “Interviews 50c” he doesn’t look threatening, and as such he has managed to engage some ordinary people, who like most of us, has a story that’s just waiting to be told.

In the interview above, filmed at Union Station in Washington DC, an elegantly dressed man named William tells Chadwick about how he used to be a homeless “bum” asking people for spare change at the very same location just a year before.

“That’s how God can change you.” Says William, a reformed drug addict who credits his life change to God.

He told Chadwick that he had been free of drugs before and that he was aware that falling back into drug dependancy was always possible. I Googled William trying to find out if perhaps he had written something somewhere online about his interview with Chadwick, but my searches drew a blank.

“I know how cunning, baffling and powerful drugs are. I go to AA, NA, I go to recovery, relapse prevention groups.” He said.

I guess William is out there somewhere, and I hope he’s still dressing sharp, still drug free, and doing okay. Maybe he’s still walking around Union Station in DC talking to people telling his story?

If you’re one of the many people who (for some strange reason) use facebook, then be on the look out for a phishing scam that is effecting the social network site.

TechCrunch are reporting the strange facebook scam which involves users being directed to a bogus facebook page and asked for their account details.

The scam involves a notice appearing on the wall of user profiles as a message from a friend, saying “Hey, I got a new facebook account. Im going to delete this one, so add my new profile” then with a link that appears to be a link to the new profile. The actual link goes to a URL on view-facebookprofiles.com, a domain registered (and whois protected) on Namecheap and hosted at Softlayer that looks identical to the Facebook login page:

Users fooled into resubmitting their Facebook details on this page then have their Facebook accounts hijacked and all of their contacts receive a similar message, propagating the phishing scam.

The reason behind the scam isn’t entirely clear, though given the kind of information that some people are willing to share on facebook and other such sites, there is a very clear data security issue.

On a personal note, I still don’t really get facebook. I know I am outside their target demographic so perhaps that’s why the nature of the site eludes me and why I’m not excited about sending ‘friends’ random shite or writing nonsense on a ‘fun wall.’ Needless to say, most of my facebook friends will never see this post because they see no worth or reason for blogging.

As another Valentines day draws to a close I thought I’d ask you to recall the craziest thing ‘love’ has ever made you do? Whatever it is, I bet the woman in the video below has got you beat.

With just a card table, two mics, a camera and a sign that reads “Interviews 50c.” NPR’s Alex Chadwick sits and waits to see what stories will come his way. This one has to be one of the more bizarre ones.

A 36 year old female lawyer from Dallas feels that her “biological clock” is ticking and that her hopes to start a family lie in personal ads. After conversing with a guy in Florida “a couple of times” said woman gives up her job, packs up her life, and drives to Florida to meet her Mr Right to maybe start a family. “I’m catholic, and I want to have a lot of kids.” She tells Chadwick.

She makes arrangements to meet her love-to-be in a restaurant in Key West, but along the way she is delayed visiting friends in Pensacola.

Her love-to-be sits in the restaurant and waits for her, but she doesn’t show up. Two days later she arrives at the restaurant, but surprise surprise he is not there. So, with her friend Anita, crazy Texas lady revisits the restuarant at the same time every night in the hope to meet her ‘Mr Right’.

Chadwick doesn’t mince his words. “Is this true?” “Yes of course,” Asserts the woman “Who could make up a story like this?” She continues. Who indeed!
