I’m not entirely sure that I feel that a ‘buy nothing day’ really has much worth. I mean, what’s the point? It’s not like that thing you might have bought on that day isn’t just going to purchased by you the day after is it? But the thinking behind it isn’t a bad idea and maybe that’s the point.
I think we’re all guilty of short term thinking. We pick up a product from the shelf with little or no thought as to where it came from, who made it, how it’s packaged, what happens to that packaging, and what will happen to the product once we’re done with it.
A tiny proportion of the world are using most of its resources, and we should probably all take a moment to ponder that for a while I guess.

RYC: Yes, I actually broke my elbow. the 2 bones in my arm were fractured…an now i need pins and wires to put the whole mess back together. i was lucky i guess….walked away, well wheeled away in an ambulance with only my broken elbow and a tiny scratch on my wrist. a stupid idiot ran over me in a big Ford f-150 and i still have everything else intact. so call me lucky…must be that half-irish thing lol! seriously thinking of getting a 4 leaf clover tattooed to my ass now! :)

Not sure if you realize this, but “Black Friday” (e.g. the day after Thanksgiving) is the biggest U.S. shopping day of the year. Stores offer deep discounts, people line up at ungodly hours of the morning, etc, just to start the Christmas spending spree off with a bang. If no one bought a thing on Black Friday, it would be a pretty big deal.

You know what Matt, I just learned that very fact about a half hour ago while chatting with my friend Susan in Mississippi. So yeah, now I get the point of the day a lot more. I also get why no one has commented, because people are thinking, “I’m not gonna buy nothing when there’s gonna the that big sale at X place.” :-)
In all honesty though mate, I can’t think of anything worse. I know that shopping like that is fun for a great many people. But shopping just doesn’t ‘sugar my tea.’ People become horrid in shops around this time of year, so much so that I will once again try to do all my shopping online.

People do get very ugly when all the shopping frenzy starts. I delight in being very nice to all of them – I am one who does not really get into Christmas shopping until about a week before Christmas. I do not charge anything, I have a set amount to spend on the 7 grandchildren…I am not really that old, my kids just got married too young! I remain very sensible with my shopping during the Christmas season…that makes it much more relaxed and I can enjoy it.

Happy Thanksgiving Darrel, and everyone. As you may well know we don’t do the whole thanksgiving thing here. Having said that I will be enjoying a thanksgiving dinner myself because my friend gave me a HUGE turkey the other day so I’ll be enjoying that tonight. Yummy!
