WHAT ARE YOUR 10 RANDOM TUNES?
Here’s a challenge for you. Switch your favorite music player to the ‘random’ or ‘shuffle’ mode then reveal the first ten random tunes your player picks. Don’t try and be cool by omitting the embarrassing ‘big hair’ rock ballads or cheesy pop you have! Just do it once and leave the result in the comments.
I currently have 6884 songs on my iPod which amounts to nearly twenty one and a half days of music. So with such an extensive selection to pick from I’m nervous that iTunes could really show me up here… but here goes!
- Low Sun – Chicane
- Bullet Proof… I Wish I Was – Radiohead
- The Sun Rising – Beloved
- America, Fuck Yeah – Team America
- Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own – U2
- Untitled 6 – Sigur Rós
- Always The Last To Know – Del Amitri
- Don’t Mess With My Man – Booty Luv
- Smells like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
- Seven Colours (After the rain comes the sun) – Lost Witness
Phew, I think I escaped pretty much unscathed there. I was worried that Paula Abdul, of 5 Star might have appeared then I would have felt obliged to explain there presence in my music collection.
So, what are you random 10 tunes?
—
What’s your signature sound?
Forgiven but not forgotten
I’m glad I was there
U who?

Two seconds to find my “ten random songs” iTunes playlist. Twenty minutes trying to work out how to export and then import into Open Office so I can cut and paste. Welcome to the 21st century.
1. Sweat Dreams, Janet Jackson
2. There She Goes, The La’s
3. Annie’s Song, John Denver (oh, the shame)
4. Do What You Have To Do, Sarah McLachlan
5. This Uncivil War, Gretchen Peters
6. Cloudbusting, Kate Bush
7. Home Away From You, Jakatta
8. Sunrise, Norah Jones
9. Mansong (one of those “funny” songs people send you on email. iTunes must have imported it)
10. Phoenix From The Flames, Robbie Williams
I ought to mention here that I’m pretty much of a MP3 slut. I’ll add absolutely anything to my ipod, chiefly so odd stuff ends up in my random playlist. I’ll then use the star rating system to sort it.

I’m not digital enough to take part in this. Maybe I’ll go into the sitting room and throw all my records in the air then close my eyes and pick up ten. That’s “shuffle” old school for you.

What’s up with that, Will? Lame.
Wrote the following comment on Apr 1, 2009 at 10:15 am
UPDATE: Annie’s song by John Denver… actually not a bad piece of (70s) music, I can see why it’s stayed on my ipod. I’d rather listen to that than Cat Stevens (man, Cat Stevens is bad!!)
Wrote the following comment on Apr 1, 2009 at 11:57 am
I actually thought Cat Stevens was pretty good. Whatever, his stuff back then is not even close to the kind of bloody awful stuff he does now.
Wrote the following comment on Apr 1, 2009 at 11:59 am
Come on Ron. Put on a blindfold and pick 10 singles from your vinyl collection. I for one am curious.
Wrote the following comment on Apr 1, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Well now I wasn’t much of a singles man myself. But my Grandson, Callum, agreed to pick out ten LP records for me if I promised to let him play them (I don’t think he understands that they’re more than one song) so give me a little while and I’ll have a list for you. It might not be pretty, I think I still have LP’s from when we used to sit the kids around the record player to sing along with whatever childrens records we could pick up at church jumble sales!

Sorry, Will. I wasn’t too clear there, but Simon is right, I want to know your top ten!
Ron, I love that you have vinyl and your collection is enviable. I just started my collection so I have lots of $1 LPs from the bargain bin at the local record store. Nothing as cool as yours. :)
Oh, and I love classic Cat Stevens. Come on, Tea for the Tillerman from Harold and Maude? Short, but a great song. It’s also the theme song from that newer Ricky Gervais show. :)

This is really limited as I haven’t loaded all my music onto iTunes or my iPod yet.
1-Every Day I write the book, Elvis Costello
2-Main Vein, Jamiroquai
3-Missing the War, Ben Folds Five
4-Time after Time, Cassandra Wilson (I much prefer the Cindy Lauper version).

7-Domino, Van Morrison
8-Forgotten Years, Midnight Oil
9-Heartbreaker, Pat Benatar

Gotta love the vinyl. My Mum had the best vinyl collection when I was a kid before it got robbed. I still remember those ABBA albums! :D
Kinda makes me sad that I am off the last generation who remember vinyl- except as a DJing thing. But remember the dissapointment when they got scratched and you had to get up and reset the needle. I have a friend with a Record Player which hooks up to the computer to digitise them! Can’t wait to get my old records on it so I can listen to them again.

Don’t knock that Proclaimer’s song – I went and bought that from the Amazon MP3 store a couple of weeks back.

In looking at this list I am reminded of an article I read a number of years ago in “The Door” (a magazine of Xian satire) where the author basically said that denominational divisions of Xianity were meaningless in light of modern socio-cultural developments, and as of consequence the author wrote the article to establish new categories by which to divide Xian culture, categories that were primarily determined by the kind of music you had in your collection, how often you cussed and what words you used when you cussed, and how often and to what degree you partook of alcohol. The categories of Xians were as follows:
-Darn
-Damn
-Shit
-F*ck
-God D*mn!
And before someone beats me to the punch, let me just say that I am sure there are some among your reading audience who would say that they are all God D*mn Christians.
